In this episode we review the newest written and directed creation from Nate Parker, who may be most known for bringing us Birth of a Nation. The movie is “American Skin” and it surrounds the idea of what could happen when those who have been treating unjustly seek justice for themselves. It has some of the best dialogue we have seen in a movie in a very long time. Even more so regarding the topic of black peoples’ relationship with the legal system and those tasked with enforcing that system. The de facto application of the rules that govern us has not been without bias, prejudice, profiling, and all out racism when involving black Americans. The stances are raw, they are extreme, but most importantly they are vocalized. The movie is a lesson in empathy, and a reminder that the change we desperately seek has yet to come.
